How to Become More Creative

how to become creative

Sometimes, you just don’t feel creative. You can’t think of a good idea, your writing sounds bland, or you’re not able to compose an interesting piece of music. If you want to be more creative, though, it isn’t something that just happens on its own—you have to work at it! Here are some tips on how to become more creative and use your natural creativity in the best way possible.

How to become more creative

Looking for ways to be more creative? In today’s fast-paced, technologically-advanced world, we’re continuously being asked to do more with less. We have more information than ever before at our fingertips; we are expected to excel in multiple areas of our lives—personal, professional and otherwise—and we are being challenged (for good reason) by employers and family members alike to accomplish things in less time. The result is that we are generally pushed harder than ever before. As a natural consequence of these factors, it seems as though today’s average person has all but given up on one important aspect of life: creativity.

Find inspiration

If you’re a creative person, one of your best sources of inspiration is other creative people. Look to artists and writers for new ways of thinking about your work; you might also find yourself inspired by design and architecture (maybe you want to build an office!), travel and adventure (you’ve always wanted to be a photographer or travel writer!) or food (everyone loves eating—might as well make it part of your work!). What inspires you? Whose work do you admire?

Surround yourself with other creative people

Creativity is a process, not an event. The people around you can impact how you develop and share your ideas. So surround yourself with people who will help your creativity flourish. That might be a friend or colleague that helps you brainstorm or someone who’s willing to accept your half-baked ideas and push you through to completion. If everyone around you discourages outside-the-box thinking and creative risks, find new friends—or get better ones. You need people who support each step of the journey, even if they don’t always see eye-to-eye with you on where it leads. In short: Diversify your inner circle.

Learn something new every day

Learning has no horizons. No matter how old we are, we can always find a way to add something new and interesting to our lives—whether it’s through travel, study, or simply doing things differently than we normally would. Make learning a daily habit and challenge yourself with something new every day—it will do more than just make you more creative; it will keep your mind sharp and active.

Do what you love

It’s no secret that doing what you love is one of the most important things in life. But it’s also essential for being creative. When we’re working on a project that comes from our passion, we don’t have to force ourselves to think of new ideas or wait for inspiration. We’re fired up and ready to go with little effort—something that can lead us down unexpected and exciting paths. If you want to become more creative, start taking steps today toward finding what truly interests you—because when you do, you won’t just make a living; you’ll make a life.

Write a list of your interests and hobbies

Studies show that our interests and hobbies may or may not change as we get older. The important thing is to use your current interests and hobbies as inspiration when you need a break from work or are looking for new ways to express yourself creatively. Consider taking up a class or participating in an activity that you’ve always been curious about. Make it something you look forward to by making it social – ask your colleagues if they have any interest in going with you. If nothing else, schedule time for non-work-related activities each week and make sure it is protected from interruptions!

Immerse yourself in the world you want to create

The easiest way to get better at being creative is to immerse yourself in the world you want to create. So, if you want to be a great writer, you should read as much as possible. In fact, it’s helpful to have a writer’s routine and schedule: create your own regimen of exercises—reading other authors and writing down your thoughts—and stick with it. If you keep the ideas flowing, good ones will start coming out regularly, which will make them easier for others to understand. The more you share your ideas, the better they’ll get. Now that’s an idea worth putting into practice!
